Let’s say your group is manufacturing a jigsaw puzzle and a few of the jigsaw pieces are your responsibility. If you focus only on your pieces, you may create perfect pieces. But if they don’t fit into the overall puzzle, the pieces become useless.

We would be wise to keep in mind the big picture and overall purpose while performing our work. Know the context of your work. Integrate with the larger team. Collaborate. Understand how your pieces are supposed to fit in and ensure that they actually fit in as you continue to work. Adjust as the big picture evolves and brings in change.

Often, when you know the context of your work and what purpose it serves, you’ll fine tune your work accordingly and produce better results.

When you start something, understand the purpose, whom it serves and the bigger picture. Then think about how well you can do it.
