Incorrect:

  • “Myself Rahul.”
  • “Myself will do it.”
  • “Rani and myself are going.”
  • “Give it to myself.”

Correct:

  • “I’m Rahul.” / “My name is Rahul.”
  • “I will do it.”
  • “Rani and I are going.”
  • “Give it to me.”

Explanation

A common mistake in India is using ‘myself’ as a substitute for ‘I’ or ‘me’. ‘Myself’ is used when both subject and object refer to you and not as a substitute for ‘I’ or ‘me’.

Think of it this way:

  • Use ‘I’ when you are the person doing something.
    • I will do it.
    • Rani and I are going.
  • Use ‘me’ when something is done to you.
    • Give it to me.
    • Send the report to me.
  • Use ‘myself’ only when referring back to yourself
    • I hurt myself.
    • I introduced myself.
  • Use ‘myself’ for Emphasis:
    • I myself checked the report.
    • I completed the project by myself.
    • I myself am going to pick her up.

When in doubt, try replacing ‘myself’ with ‘I’ or ‘me’ and use what sounds right and simpler.
