- I don’t think it is a good idea.
- They say it is a good idea. I don’t think so.
In “I don’t think so”, ‘so’ refers to something that came up already in speech. Therefore, ‘it is a good idea’ can’t follow that. Often when people say “I don’t think so it is a good idea”, they mean “I don’t think that it is a good idea”.
